Walmart 201: Working the Price Matching Policy

The idea of walking into Walmart and attempting to buy an entire trips worth of groceries and getting them to match the best prices at other stores can seem like a nightmare. It does take time, but the end result can be amazing savings!

First, sit down with your weekly circulars and find the best prices for the items you need or want. Use a highlighter or pen to mark the items you plan to purchase and dog ear the page, while making your grocery shopping list. It also helps to jot down next to the item on your list the cost and where you find the price (e.g. Bar S franks, 5/$5, Meijer).

While you're planning your shopping list, pull out the coupons you plan to use and stick them into an envelope or separate area, so you can grab them quickly. Don't forget when stacking a store coupon with a manufacturer, you can mix and match, so find the best coupon! For example, if Target has a $1/2 Bar S Franks coupon, you can match it to the Meijer circular you planned to have Walmart price match and stack it with the $1/2 coupon on the Bar S website. It can get confusing, but don't give up! Practice makes perfect.

When you head to the store take all of your circulars, along with your shopping list and coupons. If your store tends to argue with you about coupons or price matching, don't forget to take your Walmart policies (Walmart 101) with you as well!

Start shopping and don't forget, according to Walmart's policy the price matched item must be the exact same brand, size, flavor, etc...

When checking out, make sure you are in a regular line and not a U-Scan. Before they scan a single item, let them know you are taking advantage of the competitor coupon and price matching policies. At this point, they'll have to call the manager over to adjust prices. Give them items you plan to price match and show the manager the circular you want to match.

Good luck!

Tip:
1) Try to keep the items in your cart sorted by circular. For example, have a section of Meijer price matched items and another section of Kroger to expedite checkout.
